When I was first divorced, even though my ex was paying support, it wasn’t nearly enough to manage all of our bills.

I knew that I’d have to find a way to come up with the additional money without having to actually get a job outside of the house. My children were just too young, and I didn’t want to get a job for the simple sake of having to pay for daycare.

I knew that I’d have to start a side hustle with no startup money, because spending money starting a business just wasn’t an option.

At the time, blogging wasn’t remotely the same animal that it is today. I did a lot of the things back then to make money, without spending a dime. But there are also ways to make money to start that side gig if that’s what you absolutely have to do.

If you’re not good with computers, don’t stress. There are a few things here that don’t require you to have mad tech skills to make them work, but you should at least be able to manage word processing software 🙂

Here are 3 ways to start a side hustle with no startup money:

Figure out what skills you have, that could make you money.

If you have a skill, like knitting, sewing, graphic design, etc., I guarantee that there are ways to utilize that skill to make the money you need to cover all your bills, so you can stop stressing about money.

The first way that I started making some extra cash, was with ebay (obviously). I came up with the idea of selling earrings under $10, and it worked out really well (I was actually surprised at just how well I did).

In order to make the money I needed to buy my stock (which wasn’t a lot, I think I started out with something like 15 pairs of earrings), I sold a few of my own things on ebay.

If you knit, sew, have graphic design skills, etc. Etsy might be more to your liking.

Fair warning; I’ve gone the Etsy route, and I’d have to say that the competition for traffic on this site is fierce. If you have something that’s truly unique, go ahead and give it a shot, but there’s a listing fee that you have to pay with each item.

Start a Blog

The second of the 3 Ways to Start a Side Hustle with No Startup Money, would be to start a blog.

Honestly, I’d say that if you have the patience that it takes to build a blog, then get it to the point where it’s pulling the traffic it needs to make you money, I’d do this first. Start the blogging process first, because it takes time to get it to the point where it’s making you the money you need to help with your bills. If you like to write, starting a blog is a no-brainer, and the income is almost completely passive after a certain point.

If you think blogging just might be your jam, I’ve designed a 5 day “How to start a profitable blog” email course” that you can sign up for HERE (it’s free!)

Write for Others

If you enjoy writing, you could also offer writing services for others. All blogs need content, and you could easily contribute to them. I write my own content, but I’ve written for others in the past, including some of the ‘biggies’ like the Huffington Post, and Readers Digest.

I would tell you that writing in some form is your best bet for one of the 3 Ways to Start a Side Hustle with No Startup Money. As a single mom, it’s unlikely that you have the time or the resources to take on a business that requires you to purchase product.

Affiliate Marketing

Most people hear the words “affiliate marketing” and immediately assume that they need a blog to do it. I’m here to tell you that you don’t need a blog to do affiliate marketing. You can use Pinterest to do it, and it’s actually fun!

Some awesome affiliate marketing networks to help get you started are Shopstyle Collective, and Shareasale. I use Shareasale to make affiliate money with all of my blogs. It’s super easy to do!

Stay Sane! 🙂
